General

What are the process to sit for the professional interview (PI) only through the IEM, i.e. all forms and communication shall be done through the IEM?

Currently IEM had been appointed to conduct the PAE for BEM w.e.f. 1 Jan 2007. IEM forms would be used.

What happens the BEM is contacted for PI matters? BEM will refer the enquiries to IEM.

What penalties apply if I use the designation ‘Engineer’ prior registration as a GE with the BEM? Currently that is under the BEM’s jurisdiction but the penalty is provided in the engineers Act. I need to check it up before giving you an answer

Road to Professional Engineer must follow these type of qualifications:
a) Accredited Engineering Degree
b) Registered as Graduate Engineer
c) Logbook Scheme for every project when be engineer.

Training and Experience-

Is work experience gained prior to registering with the BEM as a Graduate engineer counted? Example 1, overseas experience prior to working in Malaysia as an Engineer. Example 2, performing engineering work in Malaysia prior registration. IEM recognize experience gained upon graduation so the candidate can apply to IEM immediately upon obtaining 3 years experience after graduation. BEM will however recognize experience gained after registration. Therefore the candidate upon obtaining his MIEM may not be able to transfer to PE until he satisfies BEM’s requirement which also include at least one year working experience in Malaysia

If the GE works under a PEng during the period for T&E, does the record keeping follow the same process as the logbook scheme? Or is acknowledgement in section 13 of the PI(1) form sufficient? Acknowledgement is not only in the form. It should also include endorsement on the reports. However, we do encourage using the Log Book so that the training is documented and it would be easier for them to produce their reports later on.

Will my application for a PI follow my engineering discipline, or the bulk of my experience? The candidate can indicate the discipline which they wish to be interviewed in but must be within the same are as their registered discipline for example if they are registered under Electrical, they can opt to be interviewed in the sub disciplines of Electrical but not vice versa

Application for Professional Interview –

What will occur if PI forms are sent to the BEM? The BEM will forward such forms to the IEM for processing and administration.

Does the experience portion of the PI(1) require endorsement of PEs of the same engineering branch the candidate is applying registration in? Not necessary.

Professional Interview
Does the training and experience report / logbook require endorsement of PEs of the same engineering branch the candidate is applying registration in? Yes

Where is the current list for the potential questions in the code of ethics? Together with the forms

The engineering profession in Malaysia is regulated by the Registration of Engineers Act, 1967 (revised in 1974, 1987 and 1989)

Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM) was established to administer the Act’s provision.
Only Engineers registered with the Board are entitled to practice Engineering in Malaysia.

Also known as the IEM, the Institution is a Professional Learned Society formed in 1959
IEM conducts the Professional Interview process
